Decorating your home creates a warm and inviting environment for you and your guests. Scented candles, among other things, can add a touch of elegance and a pleasant aroma to any room. However, any item that lights up to an open flame can pose dangers in a house, particularly if the product is defective.

Trader Joe’s issued a recall for roughly 653,000 of its Mango Tangerine Scented Candles due to safety risks. The flame of the 5.7-ounce candles can spread from the cotton wick to the wax and create a larger flame. The popular grocery chain sold the candles in more than 500 stores nationwide. The candles were reported to have caused 14 incidents involving high flames. These reports include three incidents of minor property damage and two minor burns.

The company requests that consumers refrain from using the recalled candles and return them to any Trader Joe’s store for a refund. They may also request a refund from the website through an online product feedback form and provide a receipt or a photo of the candle.

The dangers of home decor with flames

While it helps build a comforting ambiance at home, a scented candle has the same risks as any flammable material in your home. The National Fire Protection Association reports an annual average of 5,910 home structure fires started by candles. A defective candle might burn unevenly, have an excessively large flame or produce sparks, all of which can lead to unintended fires. Other candles, especially those made with low-quality materials or fragrances, can release toxic fumes when burned. Additionally, a candle with a defective design, such as a wick that is too long or a container prone to tipping over, can increase the risk of accidents and injuries.

Product liability and legal action

Kansas law protects consumers from dangerous products. If a product causes you harm due to a manufacturing flaw, design problem or lack of proper warnings, you may have grounds for a legal claim. On the other hand, they might not be liable if you altered the candle or used it incorrectly. Some product liability cases can be complex. If you need clarification on your situation, a legal professional may help protect your rights and ensure that companies are held accountable for their actions.
