A previous post on this blog talked about how hypoxia during childbirth, when undetected or left untreated, can leave an infant suffering from serious medical and developmental problems for the rest of his or her life.
This post specifically talked about hypoxia can contribute to cerebral palsy, significant brain damage and other debilitating conditions. It is also possible for stillbirth to be the end result of untreated hypoxia.
The key word is untreated. Thankfully, because of advances in technology and medical techniques, doctors should be able to spot signs of hypoxia, which can include symptoms like a fetal heart rate that is too high or too low. Really, doctors and other medical professionals have very few good excuses for missing signs that a baby is struggling from lack of oxygen.
Still, some doctors still miss the warning signs of this dangerous condition. Others may not react properly to it for whatever reason. For example, a doctor might decide not to go ahead with C-section when a baby is distressed or may take too long before performing one, meaning a mother both goes through a major surgery and has an injured baby.
These sorts of injuries are preventable, yet when they happen, parents have to foot the bills while their child suffers.
