What is whiplash?

The term, “whiplash,” may have a bad connotation in some circles. Some may even believe that it is not really an injury at all. They may believe that it is just a label that one puts on some aches and pains, perhaps, even just to increase one’s chances at getting compensation in a lawsuit following an auto accident.

However, this bad connotation has very little truth associated with it. Whiplash is a diagnosable injury that requires treatment and time for recovery. People who experience whiplash will likely have medical bills and treatment costs, and they may be out of work for a long time. After all, how long it takes for a person to recover from whiplash depends on the severity of their accident and other factors beyond their control.

Whiplash is a type of neck strain, or soft tissue injury, which happens when one’s neck gets jerked back and forth rapidly. The push causes muscle tears and damage to one’s neck tendons. While whiplash is commonly associated with a car accident, athletes and others can experience whiplash as well. Just about any blow, push or pull on the upper body can cause the condition.

The symptoms of whiplash include pain and an inability to move one’s neck. Victims may also experience sensitivity in the area, as well as chronic headaches. While the symptoms, sometimes, start immediately after a blow, they can also develop over time, even over days.

Whiplash is a real and serious medical condition. Kansas City residents who experience it will likely need to go see their doctor and other professionals in order to get back on track with their lives. And, they may need time away from work. If their whiplash was caused by the negligence of another person, compensation may be available.
