How can your smartphone help after a car accident?

Car accidents of any severity are frightening and disorienting. You may be concerned about sustained injuries, medical bills, vehicle repairs and whether your insurance will cover the damages. Missouri is an at fault state, meaning that the driver responsible for the accident (or their insurer) is required to pay the other party’s bills and damages.

You know that the other party was at fault for the accident, but how can you prove it? Fortunately, your cellphone may be able to help.

Photos as evidence

Most people have their cellphones on them at all times, and most smartphones can take photos and videos. After an accident, drivers should take photos of the following items to use as evidence for their insurance settlement or potential personal injury claim:

  1. Property damage.Take pictures of damage sustained by each vehicle and any other damaged property in the surrounding area. Show the extent of the damage as well as its location on the vehicle.
  2. Visible injuries.Document the extent of all visible injuries. After you leave the scene of the accident, you still need to visit a medical professional for a full physical evaluation.
  3. Surrounding area. Were there any stop signs, red lights, blind turns, railroad crossings, icy patches, potholes or other roadway conditions that influenced the accident? Take pictures of the surrounding area to document any factors that could influence your claim.
  4. Personal information.Collect the other party’s information. Take photos of their driver’s license, insurance information and license plate to ensure that you, your insurer or attorney will be able to locate them if necessary.

Take as many photos as possible after the accident. While it may seem excessive, it is better to be armed with too much information than not enough as you try to prove that the other driver was at fault. If you have any questions about what other actions you should take after an accident, an experienced personal injury attorney can be a valuable asset.
